Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza described his side’s stunning victory over Australia at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as “unbelievable” after the Chevrons secured a famous 23-run win in Colombo.

The Chevrons produced one of the biggest upsets in T20 World Cup history by defeating tournament heavyweights Australia in Match 19 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Sri Lanka.

Speaking after the match, Raza revealed that the team remained calm despite early pressure, targeting a competitive total of around 175 runs on a pitch that was expected to slow down.

“At 70 on at 10 overs, we said we were happy. Someone mentioned 190 was on, but I said no. If you push for 190, you risk getting bowled out for 140,” Raza explained.

Drawing from Zimbabwe’s previous tours to Sri Lanka, the skipper emphasized that the surface tends to get slower and lower as the innings progresses.

“We understand that the wicket slows down. If you go too hard too early, that’s when clusters of wickets fall,” he added.

Raza reserved special praise for Brian Bennett, who anchored the innings under pressure.

“We sent a message to Benny that he’s doing a great job. It doesn’t matter if he’s trying and not hitting — he doesn’t have to panic. As long as he stays there, we’ll get to a good total,” said Raza.

Zimbabwe eventually posted a competitive total close to their 175-run target, before delivering a disciplined bowling and fielding performance to restrict Australia.

The Zimbabwe captain highlighted the team’s collective effort — from disciplined bowling spells to sharp fielding, crucial catches, and game-saving boundary stops.

“The way we bowled, the way we started, the way we fielded every catch, some of the boundary stops — it’s just unbelievable. There’s nothing to fault the boys for. They wanted it, and they deserved to win,” Raza said.

This marks only the second time Zimbabwe have beaten Australia in a T20 World Cup match. The first victory came during the 2007 edition when Australia suffered a group-stage defeat to the African nation.

Zimbabwe’s victory boosts their chances of progressing to the knockout stages of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The Chevrons will now turn their focus to their upcoming group-stage clash against Ireland on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Australia face a crucial encounter against Sri Lanka on Monday.

With momentum on their side, Zimbabwe will be confident of continuing their impressive T20 World Cup campaign.
