Zimbabwe Under-23 winger Vernon Masara said he is ready to make an impact at Peterborough United after setting up a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 League One draw with Burton Albion at London Road.

Masara, 19, came off the bench and crossed for Matt Garbett to score in the final minute.

“I don’t see sitting on the bench as a bad thing,” Masara told the club’s Posh Plus service.

“It’s an 18-man game these days and I know there is always a chance I could get on and make something happen.”

The summer signing from Burnley said he had spotted a weakness in the opposition defence.

“I’d noticed they were vulnerable when wingers were cutting inside so that’s what I did in the last minute and I trusted my teammates to get on the end of it and they did,” he said.

He said the manager told him to take on his marker.

“We have a lot of wingers here, but we are all different and we are all capable of taking on tiring defenders,” Masara said.

Masara made his first appearances for Zimbabwe’s Under-23 side during the recent international break.

“Representing my country for the first time was a proud experience,” he said. “It was totally different to anything else I’d experienced, but it set me up nicely for coming back to my club.”

His only first-team start for Peterborough came in a 5-1 Carabao Cup win at Watford, where he picked up a knee injury.

“It was frustrating to pick up the injury, but as soon as it happened I knew it was bad,” he said. “I tried to run through it, but I couldn’t.”
