Zimbabwe Women secured their first-ever victory over West Indies in international cricket with a four-wicket win in the second ODI at Harare Sports Club on Sunday, giving new head coach Mark Coles his first victory in charge and levelling the series 1-1.
The Lady Chevrons bowled out West Indies for 139 before reaching 140-6 in 40.5 overs, recording their maiden win in the ICC Women’s Championship after a difficult run of results against New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa.
This is only their second win over a full member team, having previously beaten Ireland Women.
Nyasha Gwanzura led Zimbabwe’s bowling effort, taking four wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs as West Indies were dismissed for 139 in 39.3 overs.
Michelle Mavunga claimed three wickets for 36 runs, while Francisca Chipare took two for 16 to help the hosts restrict the visitors to a modest total.
Zimbabwe’s chase was anchored by Modester Mupachikwa, who scored 38 from 57 balls after making 86 in Thursday’s opening defeat.
Mupachikwa shared an opening stand of 67 with Kelis Ndhlovu, who contributed 20 from 56 deliveries, before Zimbabwe lost three wickets for three runs to briefly leave the contest in the balance.
Captain Josephine Nkomo steadied the innings with 30 from 58 balls, while Gwanzura finished unbeaten on 18 to guide Zimbabwe home alongside Michelle Mavunga.
The victory ended a difficult run for the Lady Chevrons following defeats on tours of New Zealand and Pakistan and at home against South Africa.
It also gives Coles an encouraging start to his tenure ahead of Tuesday’s series-deciding third ODI at Harare Sports Club.
The result marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwe, who will now have an opportunity to claim their first bilateral ODI series victory over West Indies.
