Zimbabwe international, Bill Antonio has signed a contract extension at KV Mechelen as they moved to secure his long term future following his impressive breakthrough season.

The new deal will ensure that the 21-year-old speedy winger staying put at KV Mechelen atleast until until 2027, with an option for an extra season.

Tim Matthys, the sporting director of KV Mechelen, had recently revealed that they would be offering Antonio a new deal.

“We are also going to include the option in Bill Antonio’s contract. Then he will be stuck for two years anyway, although I am in discussions with his broker about signing a long-term contract. That boy deserves that.”

And so it happened. Antonio signed until mid-2027 with an option for an extra season.

“Bill still had an option in his contract that would allow him to stay with us for another 2 years, but that’s not how we work as a club,” Matthys said in the Belgian media on Friday.

“He has developed fantastically and is now showing what we had in mind for him. We can only be happy about that, and we want to reward him for that.”

Antonio has been under contract with KV Mechelen since September 2022, but he only made his breakthrough this season.

The gifted winger initially gained experience at the club’s reserve side Jong KV, which plays in the second highest amateur level.

“I had to adapt to football here,” Antonio said on the club website.

“But I just kept working hard. I feel great about the club, my teammates and the supporters. My goal is to help the team move forward. Great that I can continue to do that in the Malinwa equipment in the coming years.”
