Harare – Caps United scored a goal in each half to overcome Black Rhinos 2-0 at the National Sports Stadium on Friday to depose rivals Dynamos from the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League table.

Last season’s top goal scorer William Manondo and two-time Soccer Star of the Year Rodwell Chinyengetere scored the goals that sealed the victory for Lloyd Chitembwe’s side as they overcame a tricky tie an unpredictable Black Rhinos side.

Manondo, who was yet to open his scoring account this season, finally ended his barren run after winning a spot-kick which he calmly converted just after the half-hour mark to give Makepekepe the lead.

Veteran forward Chinyengetere ensured Caps United doubled their advantage after scoring just three minutes into the second half.

After scoring the second goal,  Makepekepe never looked like surrendering their lead as they held on for an important victory.

The Green Machine, who have been playing some entertaining football this term after a forgettable campaign last year have won three of their opening four matches while drawing once and are perched at the top of the log on 10 points.

They are a point ahead of reigning champions FC Platinum, who bounced back from the defeat against Highlanders by edging visitors Bulawayo Chiefs 2-1 at Mandava Stadium.

The Zvishavane-based platinum miners appeared set for another defeat as Chiefs grabbed the lead through Obriel Chirinda barely 10 minutes into the contest.

Reigning Soccer Star of the Year Walter Musona gave the hosts a lifeline by scoring the equaliser seven minutes before halftime before midfielder Innocent Mucheneka sealed the victory for the defending champions with a goal in the 85th minute.

Meanwhile, Bulawayo giants Highlanders missed an opportunity to continue their winning run after being held to a goalless draw against Chicken Inn at Barbourfields Stadium.

Bosso dominated the early exchanges and had an opportunity to take a deserved lead when they were awarded a penalty in the tenth minute.

They were however unable to make the most of the opportunity after Lynoth Chikuhwa failed to convert the spot-kick.

Highlanders were left ruing the missed penalty as the match ended in a goalless draw, a result which left Bosso in third position with eight points.

Bosso could however be overtaken by fourth-placed Dynamos, who despite being a point adrift have a game in hand against Cranborne Bullets at the National Sports Stadium on Monday.

In other matches played on Friday, Ngezi Platinum Stars wasted a two-goal advantage as they were held to a 3-3 draw against Herentals in a six-goal thriller at the Baobab.

Premiership new boys Green Fuel’s winless start to the season continues after they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Manica Diamonds at Gibbo Stadium.
