Rising Zimbabwean golf star Robson Chinhoi shot a bogey-free six-under 66 at the Lusaka Golf Club to finish just one stroke off the lead after the opening round of the Zanaco Masters on Thursday.

Fresh from a solid outing during the recent FBC Zimbabwe Open, Chinhoi had four birdies on the front nine before adding two more on the back nine to sign for a brilliant 66.

Chinhoi’s effort was bettered by Englishman David Wicks, who initially held the early clubhouse lead after carding a seven-under-par 65.

Wicks’s bogey-free round was later matched late in the day by South Africa’s Neil Schietekat, the winner of the FBC Zimbabwe Open, the previous Sunshine Tour event a fortnight ago.

The pair hold a one shot lead over Robson Chinhoi, while South Africans Ryan van Velzen, Stefan Wears-Taylor, Jake Redman and Luke Trochado all shot five-under 67s.

Sunshine Tour rookie Stuart Krog is the second best placed Zimbabwean on the leaderboard after carding a three-under par 69 while Nyasha Muyambo and Biggie Chibvuri carded rounds of 70 and 71 respectively.
