Rising Zimbabwean professional golfer Robson Chinhoi has been nominated for the Sunshine Tour Player of the Month for May following his breakthrough victory at the Zanaco Masters last month.
Chinhoi beat South Africa’s inform star Niel Schietekat in a playoff to lift the Zanaco Masters at Lusaka Golf Club on May 21.
The victory meant Chinhoi became the second black Zimbabwean to score a victory on the Tour after Tongo Charamba, who won at the 2006 SAA Pro-Am Invitational to become the first black Zimbabwean to take the top place on the podium on the circuit.
Charamba, who is a two-time winner on the Sunshine Tour went on to win the 2008 MTC Namibia PGA Championship.
His feat has now been emulated by Chinhoi, who has shown a lot of promise in the past couple of years dominating on the east Africa-based Safari Tour circuit and also won several title locally and on the continent.
But the Zanaco Masters was his first recognised international title as the tournament is sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour.
The Nyanga-born 32-year-old golfer also had a solid outing at the FBC Zimbabwe Open last month where he tied for 24 and was third best-ranked Zimbabwean on the leaderboard.
During the month under review Chinhoi made three cuts in four tournaments with his only missed cut coming during last week’s Sunbet Challenge Hosted by Sun City, where he came short of making the weekend by one shot.
Chinhoi is one of the four nominees for the Sunshine Tour Player of the Month accolade alongside the 2023 FBC Zimbabwe Open winner Schietekat, the Kitkat Cash & Carry Pro-Am champion Louis Albertse and veteran Hennie Otto, who won last week’s Sunbet Challenge Hosted by Sun City.
