County cricket side Glamorgan Cricket has announced its 2023 pre-season schedule which will see the squad tour Zimbabwe in March in their first spell abroad since before the Covid pandemic.

They will be in southern Africa between March 1st and 17th.

During their tour of Zimbabwe, Glamorgan will train and play pre-season matches against local opposition and Durham Cricket in a mixture of white-ball and multi-day cricket.

Durham are also expected to embark on a tour of Zimbabwe after their initial visit two years ago was cut short due to the Covid pandemic.

Glamorgan have had pre-season camps in South Africa previously, as well as La Manga in Spain, but this will be their first time in Zimbabwe since 1995.

The Sophia Gardens-based outfit also toured Zimbabwe back in 1991 and their latest visit will go a long way towards normalising relations between Zimbabwe Cricket and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Glamorgan’s director of cricket Mark Wallace

“We are going to get away for pre-season, which will see us go to Zimbabwe,” said director of cricket Mark Wallace.

“The squad hasn’t been abroad for pre-season for quite a few years now so we cannot wait for the experience. Zimbabwe offers a great chance for us to hone our outdoor skills before the beginning of the season

“Then we will be back for a pre-season fixture against a strong Somerset side before we play the University and then head into the season.

Harare-born Eddie Byrom and Kiran Carlson have been playing for Zimbabwean side Mid-West Rhinos in recent months.

“We have heard great things from Kiran Carlson and Eddie Byrom, who have been playing domestic cricket out there all winter,” said Wallace.

“We can’t wait to join up with them and play some competitive cricket before our opening Championship fixture against Gloucestershire.”

On their return to Wales, Glamorgan will complete their pre-season preparation with three-day matches against local rivals Somerset at Taunton and the Cardiff UCCE students at Sophia Gardens.

Glamorgan begin their division two campaign at home to their west country rivals on Thursday, 6 April.
