Lady Chevrons clinch African Games gold after thrilling super over win over SA

The Zimbabwe national women’s cricket team etched their names into the history books by becoming the inaugural African Women’s T20 gold medallists after a memorable win against neighbours South Africa in a dramatic Super-Over in the final held at the Achimota Senior Secondary School in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday.

It was a memorable victory for the Lady Chevrons, who went into the final against their more experienced South African counterparts as underdogs.

After being sent in to bat, Zimbabwe made 112-5 in the allotted 20 overs while in reply South Africa reached 112-7 in 20 overs to force the match into the deciding Super Over.

In the Super Over, seamer Franscisca Chipare produced a masterclass display, backed by some superb work from the fielders to restrict South Africa to two runs for the loss of two wickets in six balls, leaving Zimbabwe needing 3 runs to win in 6 balls.

Rising star Kelis Ndhlovu struck a boundary from the second delivery as the Lady Chevrons clinched the gold medal with balls to spare.

Earlier, opening batter Modester Mupachikwa was the star of the show with 31 runs off 49 balls as Zimbabwe posted a total of 112/5 in their allotted 20 overs after South Africa had won the toss and elected to field.

In reply, all-rounder Miané Smit showcased an unbeaten innings of 31* runs from 32 balls for South Africa, leading to a dramatic tie before Zimbabwe secured the win in the one-over eliminator to claim the ultimate prize.
