Liverpool – England-born Zimbabwean starlet Trey Nyoni was on the scoresheet once again as Liverpool under-18s lost an eight-goal thriller against Fulham on Saturday.
Nyoni, the 16-year-old midfield arrival from Leicester City in the summer, has now scored in his last four competitive matches in the age group but couldn’t prevent the Reds falling to a 5-3 defeat in the U18 Premier League Cup at Kirkby.
Jayden Danns took his tally to nine goals in 10 games this season – and one in every game he was played at U18 level – as Liverpool led 2-1 during the first half, but a strong recovery from the visitors meant Wellity Lucky’s injury-time header was mere consolation for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side.
Callum Osmond put Fulham ahead after 14 minutes only for Nyoni to equalise four minutes later with a brilliant solo effort, going beyond several players into the box before beating another and slotting home.
Nine minutes later, Nyoni turned provider when his ball over the top allowed Danns to run on and score, but the score was level within two minutes after a free-kick by Jonathan Esenga.
Fulham hit the woodwork three times before the break and Liverpool had two goals disallowed in the second half before the visitors ran away with it with Lemar Gordon, Tom Olyott and Chibby Nwoko all scoring in the final half-hour.
Having lost their competition opener at Crystal Palace, the young Reds face an uphill task to qualify for the knockout stages with one game remaining in their group.
Liverpool are next in U18 Premier League action next Saturday when they travel to Newcastle United (kick-off 11am).
