US-based sensation Tapiwa Makarawu has become the latest Zimbabwean athlete to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics after achieving the feat in style by smashing the long standing national 200m record on Friday.
Makarawu was in a class of his own as he clocked in at an incredible 19.93 seconds at the Texas Tech Corky/Crofoot Shootout which was hosted at the Terry & Linda Fuller T&F Complex in Lubbock, Texas in US.
In he process the 23 year-old Zimbabwean not only surpassed the Olympic qualifying time of 20.16 seconds but also bettered the national record of 20.12 which was set by Zimbabwean track legend Brian Dzingai in June 2004.
Makarawu’s blistering season’s time which was achieved with a legal tail wind of +1.6 m/s places him among the favorites for a podium finish in Paris.
Makarawu adds his name to the growing list of Zimbabwean athletes who have so far qualified for the Paris 2024 Games, joining rower Steve Cox and marathon champion Isaac Mpofu.
