Chapman Golf Club-based amateur golfer Rasheed Mohamed carded a solid final round of 72 to win the 2022 Manicaland Amateur Championship at Hillside Golf Club in Mutare at the weekend.
It was Mohamed’s second title on the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA)’s amateur golf circuit this season after he successfully defended the Matabeleland Amateur Championship title at Harry Allen Golf Club in March.
The former Prince Edward School student, who also has two runner-up finishes on the amateur circuit this season went to Mutare in a confident mood having claimed the low amateur honours in the recent Chevron Golf Tour’s Gokomere Open at Chapman Golf Club.
Mohamed was in good form as he opened his campaign with a 75 but had a difficult second round after carding an 82. He finished strongly with a solid 72 which meant he finished with a 54-hole gross total of 229.
Mohamed finished 11 shots clear of Ethan Christensen, who finished with a gross of 240 after carding rounds of 79, 84 and 77 during the tournament.
Junior golf starlet Braydon Amm, who in April became the youngest qualifier for the FBC Zimbabwe Open Championship at the age of 14 was third on a total of 250 (92, 74 and 84).
Clive Muchenje of ZRP Golf Club carded scores of 80, 81 and 82 to settle for fourth on the leaderboard two shots clear of Chimanimani-based Trust Makanidzani (85, 82 and 78).
A field of 26 amateur golfers took part in the Manicaland Amateur Championship.
The next event on the calendar is the Bata Power Open to be played at Gweru Golf Club from August 27 to 28.
