Zimbabwean midfielder Tirivashe Chirikwawo has earned a new contract with Greek side Pyrgos Athletic FC after helping the club secure promotion to the country’s second division, continuing a career that has largely gone unnoticed back home despite his consistency in European football.

The 27-year-old defensive midfielder was a key figure in Pyrgos Athletic’s promotion-winning campaign, with his performances convincing the club to retain him ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Despite spending the past six years playing professionally in Greece, Chirikwawo remains one of Zimbabwe’s most under-the-radar football exports and is yet to receive international recognition with the Warriors.

A former Cornway College student in Harare, Chirikwawo initially left Zimbabwe in summer of 2015
to join Belgian team KVC Kessel-Lo 2000 then aged just 16.

After his development in Belgium made his first move to Greece in 2019, joining Athletic Club Rodos, then competing in the country’s fourth tier.

His steady progress earned him a move to third-tier side Thyella Pyrgou in 2023 before a spell with Paniliakos FC, where he featured regularly until the club folded at the end of the 2024 season.

Pyrgos Athletic quickly moved to sign the Zimbabwean, and he repaid their faith by playing a central role in their successful promotion campaign.

The club confirmed his contract extension after describing him as an influential member of the squad.

Although he has quietly established himself in Greek football, Chirikwawo’s performances have yet to translate into opportunities with Zimbabwe’s senior national team, where he remains overlooked despite his experience in European football.

As he prepares for life in the Greek second division, the new campaign could provide the strongest platform yet for Chirikwawo to push his case for long-awaited international recognition with the Warriors.
