The Paramount Garments Northern Region League returned with a bang this past weekend with premium matchups which lived up to the expectations of rugby lovers in the capital city.

The league continued after a week-long break due to the Goshawks Mzansi Challenge Cup fixture against South African side Valke.

In what was a packed line-up of enticing fixtures at the Machinery Exchange Stadium, the major highlight came from the final game of the afternoon which saw the hosts Harare Sports Club edging bitter rivals Old Georgians 33-31 in a thrilling encounter.

The game between the two giants was befitting of main game status as it produced entertaining rugby from the first kick-off with crunching tackles, flair, and skills from both sets of players keeping the crowds on their feet throughout.

The two giants had star-studded lineups with no lack of experience as they were bolstered by the return of players who have been on national duty with the Goshawks and Cheetahs.

In the end, it was Harare Sports Club players and fans who were celebrating a hard-fought victory while Old Georgians were left ruing a last-gasp missed chance after their captain Jeremiah Jaravaza missed a penalty from a difficult angle from the last play of the game.

In an earlier game, defending champions Old Hararians maintained their unbeaten start to the season following a 29-21 victory against a youthful Pitbulls side, which continues to make a positive impression in their maiden dance in the seniors’ division.

There was no lack of flair in the game with Pitbulls being boosted by the presence of rising star pion Shadrick Mandaza who produced two moments of individual brilliance to open up the OH defence and score two tries for his side.

It was so close yet so far for the Pitbulls as the experience from Old Hararians stole the day from the very youthful Pitbulls side.

The Paramount Garments league had a line-up worth waiting for in both the male and ladies’ Premier Division.

The toast of the ladies’ games pitted OGs Pitbulls (Dragon Pitbulls) versus the host for the day Harare Sports Club in a high-scoring affair with some beautiful end-to-end action exhibited by both the ladies’ sides.

FS Raiders also played minnows Hatcliffe in what was never a contest from kick-off. It was a one sided affair that culminated in a centurion score in favour of Raiders.

Paramount Garments and Accessories continues to give hope and support to the local youths in the Rugby space with the launch of the Archer Southern Region League hosted by Bulawayo Metro Rugby Board.

This will see the spreading of the game and provision of much-needed game time for the local players to showcase their talents and put their hands up for selection into the various national representative teams for both men and women.
