Star batter KL Rahul is set to lead the Indian team in the upcoming ODI series against Zimbabwe after getting a clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team.
Seasoned opener Shikar Dhawan was initially named captain of the squad, but now Rahul – who has been absent first due to an injury and later due to a Covid-19 positive test – has taken over the captaincy after being added to the 15-member squad.
“The BCCI Medical Team has assessed KL Rahul and cleared him to play in the upcoming three-match ODI series in Zimbabwe. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has appointed him the captain of the side and named Shikhar Dhawan as his deputy,” a BCCI statement read.
Rahul has suffered a spate of injuries over the last two months, post the IPL 2022 season. He was ruled out of India’s tour to England and Ireland and also missed the home series against South Africa with an abdominal injury.
The 30-year-old also missed India’s recent limited-overs tour to West Indies after testing positive for COVID-19.
Besides Rahul, all-rounders Deepak Chahar and Washington Sundar are also expected to make their international returns through the series after being sidelined with injuries over recent months.
Many first team players including substantive caption Rohit Sharma have evidently been rested.
India will lock horns with Zimbabwe in a three-match ODI series, which gets underway on August 18 at the Harare Sports Club in Harare.
