Zimbabwe international Cleopas Kundiona has been handed a timely boost after medical assessments confirmed that the knee injury he suffered on his competitive debut for Northampton Saints is not as severe as initially feared.
Kundiona, who made his Premiership bow earlier this month against Gloucester, was forced off prematurely, sparking immediate concern on the Saints’ bench.
Early indications suggested a potential anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury — a diagnosis that would have sidelined the powerful tighthead prop for several months.
However, Saints director of rugby Phil Dowson has since dispelled those fears.
“The original fear was that Cleopas had done his ACL, but he hasn’t,” Dowson confirmed in an interview with The Northampton Chronicle. “But there is a knee injury in there, so that’s probably a month or so.”
The news comes as a major relief not only for Northampton, but also for Zimbabwe rugby supporters, eager to see the 25-year-old establish himself at the highest level of English club rugby.
Kundiona, who is a key member of Zimbabwe’s national rugby side, the Sables and previously featured in France, joined Saints in the summer as part of their front-row rebuild.
Despite the setback, the prognosis means Kundiona could return to action before the end of the calendar year, allowing him valuable time to integrate into Saints’ system and push for regular selection.
His brief appearance at Kingsholm showed glimpses of his physicality and scrummaging potential — qualities that attracted Northampton’s interest. The club will now manage his recovery cautiously, with hopes that he will be available for key fixtures during the winter period.
For Zimbabwe rugby, Kundiona’s presence in the Premiership is a source of pride, symbolising the growing influence of Zimbabwean talent on the international stage ahead of the country’s return to the World Cup in Australia.
