Zimbabwe international prop Michael Kumbirai has secured a move to ambitious French club Stade Olympique Chambérien Rugby (SOC) as the Sables front-rower continues to establish himself in European rugby.
The Nationale outfit, which has reached the final and semi-finals in the past two seasons, announced the signing of the 29-year-old tighthead prop as one of the final additions to its squad ahead of a campaign aimed at securing promotion to France’s Pro D2.
Chambéry identified Kumbirai as a key recruit to strengthen its front row after his impressive performances in French rugby over the past five years.
The Zimbabwean joins the Savoie-based club on a one-year contract after spending the 2025/26 season with Niort RC, having previously represented fellow Pro D2 side Soyaux Angoulême between 2021 and 2024.
A product of South Africa’s renowned schools and provincial rugby system, Kumbirai also enjoyed professional spells with the Sharks and Stormers before moving to France.
His move comes at an exciting time in his international career.
After injury setbacks delayed his long-awaited Zimbabwe debut following his decision to make himself available for the Sables in 2023, Kumbirai finally earned his first cap in April, featuring in the international friendly against Zambia.
Since then, the powerful prop has become an important member of Zimbabwe’s squad, adding valuable experience and depth to the front row as the Sables prepare for the inaugural World Rugby Nations Cup in the United States.
Zimbabwe will face Tonga, hosts USA and Canada in the opening rounds of the new global competition before turning their attention towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
For Kumbirai, the move to Chambéry presents another opportunity to continue playing at a high level while helping one of France’s most ambitious third-tier clubs realise its dream of promotion to the Pro D2.
