Zimbabwe international flanker Tino Mavesere has been rewarded for his consistent performances at South African rugby union outfit Sharks after signing a contract extension that will him at Kings Park until June 2028.

The 26-year-old former Churchill High School star has been in excellent form this season and was recently named the man-of-the-match in Sharks’ 29-19 defeat of their fierce rivals Bulls in Pretoria.

After confirmation of Mavesere’s contract extension, Sharks director of rugby Neil Powell and defence coach Joey Mongalo revealed that the Sables star is still very much part of Sharks long-term plans.

“Such a personification of work ethic, resilience, somebody who just keeps fighting,” Mongalo said in a video released by the franchise on Monday.

“Really happy for him as an individual but it also reflects the type of character that we are trying to build at the Sharks, people who just never go away, people who just keep fighting and show character irrespective of the result.”

Mavesere played Varsity Shield from 2021 to 2022 for UWC, where his appearances earned him a move to the Sharks.

He originally signed with the franchise in 2021 but it wasn’t until 2023 that he debuted for the team in the Currie Cup, before a knee injury ruled him out after showing promise in the early stages of the Vodacom URC and Challenge Cup last season.

Mavesere has made an impressive return this season, with his breakaway score against the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus a strong candidate for try of the season
