Zimbabwe have named South African Justin Sammons as their new national cricket team head coach exactly six months after parting ways with Dave Houghton.

Sammons was previously the batting coach of South Africa between 2021 to 2023 while he has also served as head of Cricket South Africa’s High Performance Programme in addition to coaching stints with several domestic teams.

He will be assisted by former Zimbabwe international Dion Ebrahim who has been lured back home after a successful start to his coaching career in New Zealand.

Zimbabwe Cricket’s chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said Sammons’ long-term planning and reputation for nurturing young players played a big part in their decision.

“He brings a wealth of coaching experience and a reputation of identifying, nurturing and developing some of the best young talent in South Africa,” Mukuhlani said.

“His hard-working and passionate approach as well as sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward.”

Sammons will take over with immediate effect, ahead of Zimbabwe’s five-match T20 series against India which begins on July 6 in Harare.

“It is an absolute privilege to be appointed as the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Team Head Coach,” Sammons said.

“I look forward to the road ahead and I am excited to start working with this talented group of players.”

His assistant, Ebrahim, represented Zimbabwe in 29 Tests and 82 one-day internationals before he later pursued a coaching career in New Zealand where has been involved at the highest level with the Black Caps.

The rest of the technical staff for the senior men’s side will be appointed in consultation with Sammons.

Meanwhile Zimbabwe has named former captain Elton Chigumbura as head coach of their Under-19 team, taking over from Prosper Utseya.

He will be deputised by Rangarirai Norbert Manyande, who played first-class cricket in Zimbabwe before he went on to feature for Namibia, while former South Africa spinner Paul Adams will be the bowling coach.
