Zimbabwe international Marshall Munetsi praised his Wolverhampton Wanderers teamates for putting on a good show despite their 2-1 loss to Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Munetsi made his much awaited Premier League after being introduced as a second half substitute as Wolves pushed the league leaders all the way.

Despite being being given an unfamiliar role as a striker on his English Premier League debut, the Zimbabwe international had a decent outing and with a bit of luck could have scored on his debut.

After Liverpool took a 2-0 first half lead thanks to goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, Munetsi featured prominently in the second half as Wolves dominated proceedings

The Warriors vice captain forced an excellent save from the Liverpool goalie Alisson Becker before Matheus Cunha halved the deficit with over 20 minutes to play with a great finish into the far corner.

Munetsi had another attempt but his first time volley went off target before he was denied when through on goal — it took a crucial block in front of goal from Jarell Quansah to prevent him from converting late on.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Sunday’s defeat Munetsi said:

“We tried our best. The coach made some changes to put them under pressure, we created a lot of chances and made them uncomfortable.

“In the first half we didn’t really cause them a lot of problems but the second half was the identity of the team, this is what the coach wants. This is something we have to keep doing.”

On making his Premier League debut he said: “As you get more chances and opportunities it is good for you as a player but now it is up to me to do my part.”

Munetsi and his Wolves teamates can take huge positives going into their next match when they travel to Bournemouth on Saturday.
