After the heroics by Tapiwanashe Makarawu and Makanakaishe Charamba at the Paris Olympics, where they both reached the 200m final, the Southern African nation appears to have unearthed yet another gem in teenage sensation David Nyamufarira.
US-based Nyamufarira enjoyed a memorable debut for New Mexico Junior College (NMJC) by breaking the 60m national indoor record at the Corky Classic in Texas.
The 19 year-old starlet clocked a time of 6.57s to win his heat in his first competitive race for NMJC after recently moving to the US on a track scholarship.
Nyamufarira’s achievement became even more significant as the previous record by track and field veteran Gabriel Mvumvure stood for a whole decade.
Mvumvure set the previous national record at 6.60 seconds in 2014 at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland.
Ngoni Makusha was the first Zimbabwean to run the 60m indoor record in 6.60s at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in 2009 before Mvumvure equalled the record five years later.
Now a decade later, Nyamufarira has sped past the record by a margin of 0.03 seconds.
However, despite the historic performance, the Zimbabwean prodigy wasn’t the fastest sprinter during the heats.
Malachi Snow from the US was the fastest qualifier in 6.55s, while Wanya McCoy from Bahamas equaled his PB of 6.58s.
