Zimbabwe international Marshall Munetsi continues to rediscover his best form in France after producing another outstanding performance for Paris FC in their 1-1 draw away to Lyon on Sunday.
Paris FC secured a valuable point at the Groupama Stadium in their French Ligue 1 encounter, with Munetsi once again playing a central role in the team’s performance.
The 29-year-old midfielder was everywhere on the pitch. He worked tirelessly in his own half to win back possession, disrupted Lyon’s build-up play in midfield, and frequently pushed forward to support the attack.
Munetsi capped off his impressive display by scoring in the 63rd minute. He reacted quickest to a loose ball from goalkeeper Greif and slotted home what looked set to be the winning goal for Paris FC.
However, Lyon salvaged a point deep into stoppage time when Corentin Tolisso converted from the penalty spot to level the match.
Despite the late disappointment, Munetsi felt his side deserved more from the game, especially given the difference between the two teams in the standings. Lyon sit fourth on the table with 46 points, while Paris FC are 13th with 27 points.
“We managed the game well and created chances,” Munetsi said after the match.
“But football can be like that. If you don’t take your chances, these things happen. I’m not sure about the penalty decision, but we gave everything on the pitch. We worked hard and were solid. Unfortunately, it ended in a draw, but we will keep working.”
Loan Move Reviving Munetsi’s Form
Since joining Paris FC on loan from English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers during the winter transfer window, Munetsi has been in excellent form.
His goal against Lyon was his third in eight matches since arriving in Paris, to go along with one assist. Impressively, the Warriors midfielder has now scored in three consecutive matches – against Toulouse (1-1), Nice (1-0), and Lyon (1-1).
He also played a key role in Paris FC’s 2-2 draw against Marseille on January 31, winning the late penalty that earned his side a point.
Munetsi’s influence has been immediate. In fact, he has already scored more goals for Paris FC than he managed during the first half of the season in England, where he found the net twice in 15 appearances for Wolves.
His arrival has also coincided with an improvement in Paris FC’s results. Before Munetsi joined the club, the team had not won a Ligue 1 match since November. Since then, they have recorded two league victories – beating Nantes 2-1 on his debut on January 18 and defeating Nice 1-0 on March 1.
Munetsi moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers from Stade de Reims in the summer of 2024 but has quickly reminded French football fans of his quality since returning to the league on a loan deal until the end of the season.
