US-based golf ace Mauchaza finishes second in John Shippen Invitational

Zimbabwean golfer Nyasha Mauchaza enhanced his status as one of the leading back professional golfers in the US after a second place finish at the John Shippen Invitational played out at Detroit Golf Club in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday.

Mauchaza, who has featured once on the Korn Ferry this season, carded scores of 68 and 71 for a total of five-under par in the two-day, 36-hole qualifying tournament featuring the top black professional and amateur golfers in the US.

He finished two shots behind American and Michigan native Willie Mack III, who clinched the victory after shooting 63-74 for a 7-under 137.

Mack’s victory a earned him a first-place prize of $13,200 from the event’s $22,000 purse.

More significantly though the win earned him exemption in the field for the PGA TOUR’s Rocket Mortgage Classic where he will tee it up alongside the world’s best golfers at the Rocket Mortgage Classic starting Thursday.

The John Shippen Invitational is a series of competitions created to provide playing opportunities on the LPGA and PGA TOUR for the top black amateur and professional women and men golfers in the US.

The events are named after John Shippen Jr., who was both the first American-born golf professional and the country’s first black golf professional.
