US-based triple jumper Chengetayi Mapaya clinched Zimbabwe’s first medal at the ongoing African Athletics Senior Championships on Tuesday after coming second in the triple jump final at Japoma Stadium in Douala.
Mapaya, who was competing in his first major competition after battling injuries over the last couple of seasons, finished second with a 16.87m jump to claim a silver medal.

However, he missed the 17.22m Olympic Games qualification standard, but still stands a chance of qualifying through World Rankings.
Burkina Faso’s Hugues Fabrice Zango won the gold medal with 17.18m while Ghana’s Amath Faye secured the bronze medal with a best leap of 16.54m.
