Former Zimbabwe rugby youth international Alex Nyamunda is fast emerging as one of the most exciting young prospects on the global rugby radar, with Australian National Rugby League (NRL) scouts circling following his outstanding rise in the United States.

Nyamunda — whose surname was misspelled as “Nyamundra” in an Australian report — has been making headlines in America, where he was recently named Collegiate Rugby Player of the Year after a dominant season that has seen him widely regarded as the best college rugby player in the country.

Nyamunda’s journey began in Zimbabwe’s youth rugby structures before he moved to the United States to further both his studies and playing career.

Since then, the powerful 20-year-old has developed into a devastating ball carrier known for his blend of size, pace and agility.

According to Fox Sports Australia, Nyamunda is now being courted by Australian rugby league circles ahead of the Las Vegas Nines tournament, where he will feature in an All Stars squad coached by experienced Australian mentor Neil Henry.

The annual event has become a key showcase for emerging talent hoping to secure professional contracts in the National Rugby League (NRL), one of the premier rugby league competitions in the world.

Nyamunda’s explosive performances have reportedly drawn comparisons to former Queensland State of Origin hardman Chris Close, famed for his physicality and mobility. American rugby figure Dave Niu, who has been instrumental in identifying talent Stateside, is among those who believe the Zimbabwean has what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

Niu, a former St George Dragons player, reportedly identified Nyamunda during a national rugby conference earlier this year after witnessing his immediate impact with ball in hand.

A Big Opportunity in Las Vegas

With the traditional NRL Combine not taking place this year, a group of America’s top prospects have assembled for the Las Vegas Nines in a bid to impress scouts directly during competition.

For Nyamunda, the tournament represents a golden opportunity to transition from rugby union in the United States to a potential professional rugby league contract in Australia.

His rise is a proud moment for Zimbabwean rugby, highlighting the country’s ability to produce world-class athletic talent capable of competing on the global stage. Should he secure an NRL deal, Nyamunda would join a growing list of Zimbabwean sports stars making their mark internationally.

As the Las Vegas Nines unfold, Zimbabwean fans will be watching closely to see if their former youth international can turn American collegiate dominance into a professional breakthrough Down Under.
