Zimbabwe international Tawanda Chirewa has been ruled out of a reunion with former club Huddersfield Town A.F.C. this weekend due to injury.
Barnsley’s League One derby away at Huddersfield on Saturday would have marked Chirewa’s return to the John Smith’s Stadium, where he spent the second half of last season on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C..
However, the midfielder will not feature in the clash after being sidelined with an ankle injury.
Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane confirmed that Chirewa remains unavailable, dealing a blow to the visitors ahead of the eagerly anticipated derby. The setback means the Zimbabwean will have to wait longer for a chance to face his former teammates.

The injury has also disrupted Chirewa’s fresh start at Barnsley F.C. following his transfer deadline day move from Wolves.
Chirewa arrived at Oakwell hoping for regular first-team football, but the ankle problem has limited his impact and stalled his momentum during the early stages of his Barnsley career.
The 21-year-old joined Wolves from Ipswich Town F.C. in 2023 and has since made 10 Premier League appearances at Molineux. Despite breaking into the senior setup, opportunities have been restricted, with only two substitute appearances this season prior to his switch.
Seeking more consistent minutes, Chirewa opted for the move to League One, where Barnsley offered the prospect of a bigger role in midfield. However, his latest setback has delayed that opportunity.
The Zimbabwean has previously gained valuable experience through loan spells at Derby County F.C. and Huddersfield Town as he continues his development across the English Football League.
For now, Chirewa’s focus will be on regaining full fitness as he looks to finally kickstart his Barnsley chapter.
