Kamangirira runs season’s best in 400m hurdles

African Games bronze medallist Ashley Kamangirira continued her bid to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games by running a new season best time in the women’s 400m hurdles at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas in the United States on Friday.

The US-born Zimbabwean athlete clocked a 400m hurdles season best of 57.73 seconds to finish fourth in the final at the Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium.

The race was won by American Deshae Wise, who crossed the finish line in 55.94 seconds while her compatriot claimed second position in 57.03 seconds.

South Africa’s Gontse Morake completed the podium by finishing third in 57.47 ahead of Kamangirira, who had to settle for fourth position in 57.73 seconds.

Kamangirira’s time however falls short of the Paris Olympics qualifying mark of 54.85 seconds although she has been making steady progress since the start of the season.

The 26-year-old specialist sprint hurdler won a bronze medal for Zimbabwe in the women’s 100m hurdles at the African Games in Accra, Ghana last month after finishing third in the final in a time of 13.59 seconds.

She missed out on a double after finishing fourth in the 400m hurdles final in 58.26 seconds.
