Kuipers finishes second at Africa Triathlon Championships

Zimbabwe’s leading triathlete Andie Kuipers enhanced her chances of qualifying for the Paris Olympic Games after claiming a silver medal in the women’s elite event (Standard Distance) at the Africa Triathlon Championships in Hurghada Egypt on Saturday.

After successfully hosting the Africa Triathlon Championships in 2023, Hurghada, Egypt, once again welcomed some of the continent’s biggest stars for the 2024 edition of the event.

In addition to continental prestige, Olympic the prestigious event also provided an opportunity for athletes to boost their qualification hopes for the Summer Olympics.

It was a successful outing for Kuipers as she put on a good show in the challenging yet fast standard distance course which was on offer in the Red Sea resort.

The race was won by South Africa’s Vicky Van Der Merwe as she continued her superb run of form on African soil this year, having claimed three Africa Cup wins and the African Games title.

Van Der Merwe, who is poised to represent South Africa at the Olympics held off the challenge of Zimbabwe’s Kuipers who settled for silver.

Kuipers also claimed the gold medal in the Elite Women U23 category.
