Mpofu powers to top 10 finish in World Athletics Championships marathon

    Long distance running ace Isaac Mpofu put on another solid display at the global stage after finishing 10th in the men’s marathon at the 2025 Track and Field World Championships in Tokyo in the early hours of Monday morning.

    Mpofu, who finished 19th in the men’s marathon at the Paris Olympics last year, went a step further by registering a top 10 finish at the World Athletics Championships and in the process setting his season high record by finishing in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 46 seconds.

    The veteran Zimbabwean finished behind Clayton Young, who was the top American finisher, running 2:10:43 for ninth, the same place he finished at last year’s Olympic marathon.

    Meanwhile the men’s marathon race was won my Alphonce Simbu of Tanzania, who just squeezed past Amanal Petros of Germany at the line to win the 2025 title in 2:09:48.

    It was the closest marathon finish in world championship history.

    Illiass Aouani of Italy, who entered the stadium with Simbu and Petros for the final 350 meters, took the bronze medal in 2:09:53.
