Zimbabwe-born Chinese star Shijie Li wins first amateur title

    -

Zimbabwe-born Chinese star Shijie Li bagged his first win on the Zimbabwe amateur circuit after his 8 stroke victory in the Mashonaland West Golf Union amateur championship at Norton Country Club on Sunday.

Li shot fired a brilliant final round 7 – under par 65 to add to his 68 and 79 in the first two rounds for a 4 – under par 212 total.

The 19-year-old Borrowdale Brooke golfer finished 8 shots ahead of nearest rival Munesu Chimhini who carded 77, 74 and 69 to close on 4 – over par 220 while Tanaka Chatora was three shots further back after rounds of 72 78 and 73.

Born at Avenues Clinic in Harare to Chinese nationals, Li has been doing well locally in recent weeks after he missed the Manicaland Amateur to eventual winner Keegan Shutt by just one shot at the beginning of the month.

Li also did well at the Matebeleland Amateur after he took the runner up spot again behind Shutt and this time by two shots.

And with Shutt not taking part at MAWEGU, Li took full advantage to win his first amateur title in Zimbabwe.

The MAWEGU women’s title was won by Zarina Makwarimba who grossed 254 and Lilly Ascott who managed 269.
