The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) on Thursday refuted allegations that it sent an excessively large delegation to the ongoing Paris Olympics that included more officials than athletes.

Social media has been abuzz with reports since Wednesday that Zimbabwe’s delegation comprised seven athletes and 67 officials.

ZOC chief executive Marlene Gadzirayi said contrary to the allegations, Zimbabwe’s official delegation comprised seven athletes and 10 officials, mostly coaches and trainers for the sportspersons.

The southern African country is represented by Isaac Mpofu (marathon), Rutendo Nyahora (marathon), Makanakaishe Charamba (200m sprint) , Tapiwa Makarawu (200m sprint), Stephen Cox (rowing), Dennis Cyprianos (swimming) and Paige van der Weisthuizen (swimming).

ZOC chairperson Thabani Gonye emphasised that the officials were essential for supporting the athletes and ensuring their optimal performance.

“ZOC officially announced more than a week ago members of Team Zimbabwe made up of 7 athletes and 8 officials headed by Mr. Mapondera as Chef de Mission representing the nation at the Paris2024.

“We are aware though that there are many other technical officials, dignitaries invited to the games directly to officiate and as guests and many other hundreds of Zimbabweans in Paris in various capacities some to support our team at the Games who as ZOC can’t account and comment on,” Gonye said.

“These are not part of Team Zimbabwe delegation but Zimbabweans all welcome and free to cheer our athletes on. As stated we announced and alluded to 7 athletes, 8 officials including the CDM assigned as Chief of Mission,” added the ZOC president.
