Zimbabwe Sables scrumhalf Tyrone Gombe scored a well-taken try as DHL Stormers Bolts secured a 40-24 victory over Sharks GEN in the SA Rugby U20 Cup in Durban on Friday.
Gombe started on the bench, with Jayden Brits wearing the No. 9 jersey, but made an immediate impact after coming on in the second half.
The Zimbabwe international crossed in the 68th minute with a well-executed finish as the Stormers Bolts maintained their control of the match.
Gombe also made an important contribution in defence, producing a last-ditch tackle to deny Sharks GEN what appeared to be a certain try.
The victory gave Stormers Bolts their second successive bonus-point win after they opened their campaign with a 55-22 victory over Sharks GEN at home.
Gombe, who moved to South Africa with his family when he was two, has built a reputation as a dangerous attacking scrumhalf.
He came through the Western Province Under-18 system and attended Wynberg Boys’ High School in Cape Town, where he was coached by current Zimbabwe Sables head coach Piet Benade.
Gombe made his senior international debut for Zimbabwe in a friendly against Zambia, coming off the bench to score a try.
He was subsequently included in the Sables squad for their maiden appearance at the World Rugby Nations Cup.
His latest performance provides another reminder of the depth emerging around the Zimbabwe national team, with Gombe continuing to gain valuable experience in South African rugby.
