Zimbabwe international forward Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya continued his remarkable start to the season by scoring again as AmaZulu beat Richards Bay 2-1 in the South African Premiership on Saturday.
Ngwenya found the net for the fifth consecutive match, taking his league tally to six goals in five appearances and maintaining his place at the top of the division’s leading scorers standings.
The 23-year-old had already made history before the Richards Bay match by becoming the first player in Premiership history to score in each of his team’s first five matches of a campaign in all competitions.
His latest goal therefore extended an individual scoring run that has become a defining feature of AmaZulu’s opening weeks of the season.
Ngwenya has now scored eight goals and provided one assist in six matches across all competitions, directly contributing to nine of AmaZulu’s goals.
The former FC Platinum forward had gone into the match as the league’s leading scorer with five goals, but Richards Bay managed to contain him during a first half in which neither side registered a shot on target.
He needed only six minutes after the restart to break the deadlock.
Richards Bay levelled when Moses Mthembu converted from the penalty spot, but AmaZulu restored their lead soon afterwards through Nkosikhona Radebe, who finished from close range.
The victory lifted AmaZulu above Kaizer Chiefs into third place in the Premiership standings.
Ngwenya has been central to AmaZulu’s strong start, scoring against several of the division’s leading sides, including champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
AmaZulu will look to extend their run when they host Marumo Gallants next, before travelling to Polokwane City and Durban City.
Richards Bay remain without a win after five matches and next face an away trip to Milford FC before hosting Sekhukhune United and Mamelodi Sundowns.
