The Zimbabwe Sables have named their squad to face Zambia in their 2026 international season opener, with exciting fullback Tapiwa Mafura included in the starting XV for Saturday’s clash at Harare Sports Club.

The match, scheduled for April 25, marks the beginning of a two-match series between the neighbouring nations, with the return fixture set for Bulawayo on May 2.

Mafura Returns to Boost Sables

Mafura’s selection comes just days after he parted ways with South African side Lions due to limited game time.

The 30-year-old has since returned home and linked up with the national team as preparations intensify for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

His inclusion adds some much needed flair, pace and experience to the Sables’ backline as Zimbabwe look to make a strong start to their international campaign.

Michael Kumbirai

Kumbirai Set for Long-Awaited Debut

Captain Hilton Mudariki leads a well-balanced squad blending locally-based experienced campaigners with emerging talent.

Among the standout inclusions is France-based prop Michael Kumbirai, who is set to make his long-awaited debut.

The former Sharks and Stormers front-rower, now playing for Niort Rugby Club, had previously been sidelined by injuries since declaring for Zimbabwe in 2023.

Zimbabwe will be without several of their foreign-based players for the Zambia series due to ongoing club commitments in Europe and South Africa.

Despite these absences, the Sables are expected to regain most of their key overseas stars later in the season when the international window opens, which will significantly strengthen the squad ahead of tougher assignments.

Busy International Calendar Ahead

The Zambia series kickstarts what promises to be a crucial season for the Sables. Zimbabwe will face a South Africa ‘A’ side on June 20 in Gqeberha before heading to the United States for the World Rugby Nations Cup in July.

The Nations Cup is a newly introduced second-tier international competition, offering Zimbabwe valuable game time ahead of their anticipated return to the global stage.
