Teenage golf sensation Munesu Chimhini etched his name into the history books after becoming the first Zimbabwean to win the boys’ title at the First Capital Bank Zimbabwe Junior Open.
Chimhini delivered a composed performance to secure a wire-to-wire victory against a very strong field at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Estate on Sunday, ending South Africa’s dominance of the tournament.
Since the inaugural edition in 2022, South African junior golfers had won every boys’ title, making Chimhini’s triumph a landmark moment for Zimbabwean golf.
Heading into the final round with a one-shot lead, Chimhini showed remarkable composure under pressure.
The youngster, who plays out of Chapman Golf Club never looked in danger of surrendering his advantage, carding an impressive final-round 68.
Despite a bogey on the final hole, he comfortably finished the tournament at 11-under-par, sealing victory by three strokes.
South Africa’s Syan Ramchander finished second after a final-round 73 for a five-under par tournament total and was unable to close the gap on the in-form Zimbabwean.
Chimhini’s victory marks a significant milestone for local golf, signaling the rise of a new generation of Zimbabwean talent capable of competing — and winning — at the highest junior level.
