After spending nearly seven months without playing competitive football, Zimbabwe international Andy Rinomhota made a welcome return to the pitch this weekend — marking his second debut for Reading FC since re-signing early this month.
Rinomhota’s hiatus began when his contract with Cardiff City expired at the end of June 2025.
Since then, he had remained unattached, until Reading offered him a short-term deal until the end of the season.
On Saturday at Bloomfield Road, the 28-year-old came on as a second-half substitute in Reading’s convincing 3–0 away win over Blackpool FC, replacing Kamari Doyle for the final minutes — an emotional moment as fans welcomed back one of their own.
Rinomhota first rose through Reading’s youth system before making 139 senior appearances between 2015 and 2022, then moving to Cardiff City.
At the end of the 2024/25 season, amid relegation for Cardiff, Rinomhota,
was named the club’s Players’ Player of the Season.
Despite his solid season he left the Welsh outfit as he found himself without a club for the first time in his professional career.
His return to Reading — now under the management of Leam Richardson, under whom he previously played on loan at Rotherham United — feels like more than just a transfer: it’s a reset, an opportunity to re-ignite his career at a familiar home.
With the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco on the horizon, Rinomhota’s return to club football could be timely — giving him a platform to prove his fitness and form ahead of potential national duty.
This comeback narrative adds a deeper significance to what might have seemed at first a routine second debut: for Rinomhota, Saturday was not just a step back into club colours — it was a return to proving himself again.
