Zimbabwe international Tawanda Chirewa says he is fully focused on earning regular minutes at Wolverhampton Wanderers after gaining valuable experience at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The 21-year-old forward, who represented the Warriors at his first senior AFCON tournament, featured in all three of Zimbabwe’s group-stage matches as the team exited the competition early.

Despite the disappointment, Chirewa believes the experience has strengthened his mentality as he pushes for a bigger role in the English Premier League.

Following his return from international duty, Chirewa has been included in all of Wolves’ recent matchday squads and made a substitute appearance in the club’s first league win of the season against West Ham United.

It marked his second senior outing of the campaign and his 10th overall for the Midlands side.

Speaking to Wolves’ official website, the Zimbabwean attacker made it clear that his focus is firmly on contributing during the second half of the season.

“Right now, I’m trying to play,” Chirewa said.

“I want to get into this team and help Wolves stay in the league however I can.”

Born in Chelmsford, London to Zimbabwean parents, Chirewa revealed that football has always been central to his life.

From playing in the park with friends to watching matches with his father, the sport became his identity from an early age.

His move away from home to join Ipswich Town’s academy was a defining moment, exposing him to different cultures and professional football demands at a young age.

“Football is all I’ve known. Adapting to new environments early helped me grow, both as a player and as a person,” he explained.

Chirewa credits self-belief as the key factor behind his steady rise. He made his professional debut at just 16 years old while still in school, a moment that confirmed he was on the right path.

“I’ve always believed I could reach the top. I’ve never really had a moment where I felt I’d ‘made it’ – I just keep pushing,” he said.

The decision to join Wolves from Ipswich Town was a calculated one, driven by his desire to test himself at the highest level.

At the time, Ipswich were in League One, and Chirewa felt Premier League football would better challenge his potential.

“I wanted to see how good I really was against the best players in the world,” he said. “As soon as Wolves came in, I knew it was the right step.”

While he reflects positively on making his Premier League debut in January 2024, Chirewa remains grounded, preferring to focus on what comes next rather than past achievements.

For Zimbabwean football fans, Chirewa’s progress at Wolves represents another promising sign of local talent competing on one of football’s biggest stages.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether the Warriors forward can translate his AFCON experience and youthful confidence into consistent Premier League minutes.
