Sprint sensation David Nyamufarira further enhanced his reputation as one of the world’s most exciting young speedsters after storming to victory in the men’s 100 metres at the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a breathtaking wind-assisted time of 9.88 seconds.
Competing for New Mexico Junior College in his final meet before transferring to University of Southern California, the 21 year-old Zimbabwean clocked 9.88 seconds with a +4.2 m/s tailwind.
Although the mark is not eligible for official record purposes because the wind exceeded the legal limit of +2.0 m/s, it stands as the fastest time ever recorded by a Zimbabwean under all conditions and also ranks as the quickest all-conditions performance in NJCAA history.
The victory crowned an extraordinary breakthrough season for the Zimbabwean teenager, who has consistently delivered elite performances on the US junior collegiate circuit.
Earlier this year, Nyamufarira rewrote the Zimbabwe national record in the 60 metres indoors, clocking 6.57 seconds to establish himself as one of Africa’s premier sprint prospects.
Nyamufarira is set to join the University of Southern California, one of the most prestigious sprint programmes in the United States, where he will continue his development against world-class competition.
His latest feat adds to what has been a remarkable period for Zimbabwean athletics, with the country’s men’s 4x400m relay team qualifying for the World Championships and several young athletes posting record-breaking performances around the world.
At just the beginning of his career, Nyamufarira appears destined for even greater achievements as he continues to push the boundaries of Zimbabwean sprinting.
