Rising star Jonah Fabisch is savoring every moment of his Africa Cup of Nations debut, after impressing in Zimbabwe’s narrow 2–1 defeat to tournament favorites Egypt in Agadir on Monday night.

The industrious midfielder, who plays for German third-division side FC Erzgebirge Aue, caught the eye with a solid display as the Warriors came agonizingly close to causing an upset against heavyweights Egypt.

Speaking to his club’s official website, Fabisch praised the tournament’s organization.

“The conditions are top. Hotels, pitches – everything is really at a very high level. Also, the atmosphere is fantastic. The people in Morocco are happy to host the Africa Cup in their country,” he said.

He described the opening match in Agadir as special, noting the “great energy on the pitch.”

Despite Zimbabwe being underdogs, the team even took the lead before Egypt fought back with goals from Omar Marmoush and Mo Salah in stoppage time.

Fabisch also highlighted the tournament’s demanding schedule:

“We have a lot of training at the base camp, with meetings in between. The coaches really try to get everything out of us and are very demanding. Nobody wants to feel they didn’t give everything at a tournament of this level.”
Though still new to international competition, Fabisch emphasized his professional focus.

“I haven’t seen much of the country yet because there’s hardly been time. Everyone is well advised to recover and prepare for the next session. But I’m not here on vacation – we want to achieve something,” he explained, sending greetings to his teammates back in Aue, who are currently on holiday.

Fabisch and Zimbabwe will next face Angola on Boxing Day and after his strong showing against Egypt, he is expected to retain his place in the starting lineup.

The 24-year-old midfielder’s calm and disciplined approach has already made an impression, and he remains focused on helping his team succeed on the continental stage.

“Every day here is a learning experience. The tournament pushes us to give everything,” Fabisch concluded, underlining his determination to make Zimbabwe proud.
