Zimbabwe earned their place in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-1 draw with Kenya at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa on Friday evening.

In what has been a momentous turnaround for Zimbabwean football, who were in the international wilderness with a politically influenced FIFA ban, they have sealed a place at AFCON for the first time since 2019.

With nine points and one game to go, against Cameroon, in Polokwane, the Warriors have a four-point lead over third-placed Kenya, who are eliminated alongside Namibia, who picked up only one point from five games in Group J.

The mathematical qualification came after an intense match that demonstrated both teams’ determination throughout 90 minutes of play.

The initial breakthrough arrived in the 32nd minute when Tawanda Maswanhise demonstrated excellent technical ability inside the penalty area.

The Motherwell FC forward executed a clean strike that found its intended target, putting Zimbabwe in front.

Despite maintaining their advantage until the interval, Zimbabwe faced sustained pressure from the Harambee Stars, who created multiple opportunities during the opening period.

The second half brought increased intensity from the Kenyan side, resulting in an equaliser through Jonah Ayunga’s successful attempt.

The remainder of the match witnessed Kenya mounting consistent attacks in pursuit of victory, yet Zimbabwe’s defensive organisation remained steadfast until the final whistle.

This result confirmed Zimbabwe’s participation in the continental tournament, which Morocco will host in 2025.

The qualification represents significant progress for Zimbabwean football, marking their return to major continental competition.
