Zimbabwe Sables assistant coach Ricky Chirengende has reflected on a special reunion with one of his former players after Saturday’s clash between Zimbabwe and South Africa A in Gqeberha.
While the match itself formed an important part of the Sables’ preparations for the World Rugby Nations Cup and the 2027 Rugby World Cup, it also provided Chirengende with a personal moment of pride as he caught up with Springbok squad member Ntuthukomchunu, whom he once coached at school level.
Chirengende coached Ntuthukomchunu during his time at Maritzburg College, where the talented forward captained the school’s First XV in 2018.
Now a member of South Africa’s world champion Springbok setup, Ntuthukomchunu’s rise through the ranks served as a reminder of the impact coaches can have on the careers of young players.
Taking to social media after the match, Chirengende shared his delight at seeing his former captain thriving on one of rugby’s biggest stages.
“One of the best parts of coaching is watching young players grow into the people and players they’re destined to become,” Chirengende wrote.
“Ntuthukomchunu was my captain of the Maritzburg College 1st XV in 2018 when I coached it. This weekend I got to catch up with him as a member of the world champion Springbok squad.
“A special moment, a proud coach and a brilliant rugby weekend all round.
“Some journeys are worth celebrating! Proud of you Skip!”
For Chirengende, who has become an integral member of the Sables coaching team, the reunion was a fitting reminder that success in rugby is measured not only by results on the field but also by the development of players who go on to achieve their dreams.
As Zimbabwe continue their build-up to a demanding international season, Chirengende will hope some of the young players currently coming through the Sables ranks can one day inspire similar feelings of pride.
