US-based Zimbabwean track star Vimbayi Maisvorewa clocked a new women’s national 400m outdoor record of 50.25 seconds, in coming second at the Tom Jones Memorial at the Percy Beard Track in Gainesville, Florida

Maisvorewa’s record breaking time was well within the 2025 World Athletics Championships qualification standard time for the women’s 400m which is set at 50.75 seconds.

The Tokyo World Athletics Championships are set for September 13-21.

Maisvorewa joins her compatriots Makanakaishe Charamba and Tapiwanashe Makarawu, who have already qualified for the global Championships by virtue of having reached the final of the men’s 200m at the Paris Olympic Games.

The 25-year-old Mutare-born athlete Maisvoreva continues to scale great heights since her move to the USA three years ago initially to Cloud County Community College in Kansas.

During her time at Cloud County Community College Maisvorewa won two national championships, before moving to Auburn University, where she is teamates with Charamba.

The pair are both mentored by revered coach and former Zimbabwean Olympian Ken Harden, who was recently named the 2025 Men’s Indoor Track & Field National Assistant Coach of the Year by the US track and field and cross-country coaches Association.
