Zimbabwe Sables head coach Pieter Benade has welcomed the upcoming clash against a South Africa ‘A’ side as a defining test of his squad’s World Cup readiness, while his South African counterpart Rassie Erasmus believes the fixture will serve both teams’ long-term ambitions.

The Sables are set to face South Africa ‘A’ on 20 June 2026 at the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, in a high-profile curtain-raiser to the blockbuster encounter between the South Africa national rugby union team and the Barbarians.

Speaking after the confirmation of the historic encouter by both Zimbabwe Rugby Union and SA Rugby , Benade framed the match as more than just a fixture — but a crucial benchmark for Zimbabwe’s progress following their qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to test ourselves against one of the world’s top rugby systems,” said Benade.
“It’s a challenge that will push our standards and give us a clear picture of where we are as a team.”

The Sables boss highlighted the developmental value of facing elite opposition, stressing that such matches are essential in preparing his squad for the global stage.

“Experiences like this accelerate growth. Our players will be exposed to a higher level of intensity, and that’s exactly what we need as we build towards the World Cup.”

Zimbabwe’s qualification for the 2027 tournament — their first appearance in over three decades — has raised expectations, and Benade sees the South Africa ‘A’ clash as a statement opportunity.

Erasmus: SA ‘A’ key to World Cup planning

On the other side, Erasmus echoed similar sentiments, underlining the strategic importance of the match for South African rugby structures.

“The match between SA ‘A’ and Zimbabwe will be a fantastic opportunity for both teams to achieve their objectives with the Rugby World Cup in mind,” said Erasmus.

The Springbok coach pointed to the proven value of the SA ‘A’ programme in building depth and maintaining competitiveness at the highest level.

“From a South African perspective, we’ve seen the benefits of exposing players to quality opposition through SA ‘A’ fixtures.”

Beyond the immediate contest, the fixture also reflects growing collaboration between Zimbabwean and South African rugby structures — a partnership aimed at strengthening the sport across the region.

For Zimbabwe, the occasion presents a rare chance to perform on a major international stage, in front of a global audience, and against one of rugby’s most formidable systems.

With the Sables’ confidence on the rise and their World Cup return looming, all eyes will be on how Benade’s men respond to what promises to be one of their toughest tests yet.

The Sables are also set to compete in the Worls Rugby Cup of Nations with fixtures against Tonga, Canada and USA already confirmed in July.
