Warriors’ World Cup qualifying hopes suffer huge blow with defeat to minnows Lesotho

Zimbabwe’s hopes of qualifying for their maiden World Cup were dealt a major blow following a morale shattering 2-0 defeat to minnows Lesotho in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier Group C clash played at Orlando Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Warriors came into the tie rooted at the bottom of Group C with two points from their opening two matches.

They held Rwanda to a goalless stalemate away from home, and avoided defeat against Nigeria, as the tie ended 1-1.

Lesotho on the other hand had shown that they’re no pushovers, holding both Nigeria and Benin to 1-1 and 0-0 draws, respectively.

Zimbabwe were still favorites to secure the victory but despite boasting of a formidable squad on paper they came out second best against a well drilled Lesotho side.

Rethabile Rasethuntsa opened the scoring for Lesotho, capitalising on an error by the Zimbabwe keeper Benard Donovan to put his team ahead in the 21st minute.

With Zimbabwe pushing man forward in search of an equalizer, Lesotho doubled their advantage just ten minutes later courtesy of Jane Thaba Ntso to put the game beyond the Warriors’ reach.

With the shock win, Lesotho now sit atop Group C s, while Zimbabwe languish at the bottom with just two points.

Despite Zimbabwe throwing everything at their less-fancied opponents, Lesotho held on to claim a historic victory and shoot to the top of Group C with five points from three matches.
