Zimbabwe rugby star Tapiwa Mafura stuns with Currie Cup hat-trick for Lions

In a stunning performance, Zimbabwe Rugby sensation Tapiwa Mafura made an indelible mark in only his second Currie Cup appearance for the Lions, scoring three tries in their dominant win against the Pumas in Nelspruit on Friday night.

The 28-year-old winger, who recently made the switch from the Free State Cheetahs to join Lions, showcased his incredible skill and athleticism, leaving spectators and opponents alike in awe of his abilities on the field.

Mafura’s hat trick propelled the Johannesburg-based outfit to a convincing
75-21 victory at Mbombela Stadium, as they continue their fine start to their Currie Cup campaign following an opening round win over the Sharks in Durban last week.

From the opening whistle, Mafura, a two-time Currie Cup winner over the last two seasons with the Cheetahs and the Pumas, demonstrated an impressive blend of speed, agility, and rugby IQ that highlighted why Lions were so keen to secure his signature.

His first try came in the 25th minute, barely seven minutes after coming on for Edwill van der Merwe.

The Zimbabwe international his second and third tries either side of the half as he further underscored his versatility and adaptability on the pitch which should make him a valuable asset for the Lions in the United Rugbu Championship (URC) this season.

From his clever positioning or his acceleration to exploit a counter-attack opportunity, Mafura’s all-rounder performance in Nelspruit hinted at a promising future in Johannesburg.

The Zimbabwean display did not go unnoticed as fans and pundits alike lauded his exceptional debut and anticipate the electrifying moments and try-scoring prowess he will bring to the team in the upcoming matches.
