Zimbabwean rising star Tafadzwa Chikomba continues to make waves on the US collegiate circuit after producing a record-breaking performance to win the men’s long jump on day one of the Oregon Team Invitational at Hayward Field on Friday.
In just his second outdoor jump of the season, Chikomba soared to a huge 8.25m despite a -2.2 headwind, setting a new personal best in the process.
That mark also saw him break Kansas State University’s men’s long jump school record of 8.21m, which had stood since 1988 and was previously held by Kenny Harrison.
Chikomba has been in outstanding form throughout 2026.
Earlier this year, he won the long jump at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational with a leap of 8.09m and was named Big 12 Men’s Athlete of the Week.
The Zimbabwean junior has also shown his speed on the track, clocking 10.33 seconds in the 100m at the Stanford Invitational earlier this month.
According to World Athletics, Chikomba entered the season with a personal best of 8.10m and has rapidly emerged as one of the NCAA’s leading jumpers.
“I’m extremely proud of Tah and the way he executed his plan tonight,” said K-State head coach Travis Geopfert.
“It’s so fun to watch the work he’s putting in and growth he’s having as an athlete. He’s a special talent that is very coachable. Extremely proud of this young man!”
