Former Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) president Aaron Jani passed away on Wednesday at the age of 51 following a battle with cancer.
Jani represented Zimbabwe at international level as a player before moving into the administration of the game.
He was first elected ZRU president in 2017 and successfully secured another term in 2021 which came to an end last year.
Jani’s influence in the administration of the game also transcended into continental rugby as was also part of Rugby Africa’s powerful executive committee at the time of his death.
“It is with profound sadness that the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) and the rugby community mourn the loss of our esteemed former President, Aaron Jani,” said the ZRU in a statement Wednesday evening.
“Aaron was a towering figure in our sport—a leader, a visionary, and a passionate advocate for rugby in Zimbabwe and beyond. Jani was a Sable, living for the game, and his passing marks one of the saddest days in Zimbabwe Rugby. His unwavering dedication during his tenure as ZRU President brought stability, growth, and pride to our community, leaving an indelible mark on the Sables, junior rugby, and women’s rugby development.
“On behalf of the entire ZRU family, we extend our deepest sympathies to Aaron’s loved ones during this difficult time. His legacy will forever inspire us as we continue to build on the foundation he so tirelessly strengthened.
“Rest in peace, Aaron—your spirit will always be part of Zimbabwean rugby. With heartfelt condolences.”
Born in Chinhoyi, Jani’s rugby journey started at Milton High School, where he rose from being a gifted sprinter to a rugby progidy, before he was offered a scholarship at Christian Brothers College.
After completing his studies he then moved to Old Miltonians where his success resulted in a call-up to the Zimbabwe Under-20 side in 1991.
Jani then progressed to the senior national side the Sables which then featured in the then South African second tier competition, the Bankfin Cup until his retirement in 1997.
After his retirement from playing Jani moved into rugby administration, initially serving as ZRU’s vice president under Bruce Hobson.
