English Premier League side Luton Town has confirmed that Zimbabwe international midfielder Marvelous Nakamba is set for a long spell on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery earlier this week.

The Warriors skipper has struggled with injury issues receiving a knock during Zimbabwe’s Fifa World Cup qualifier against Nigeria in Rwanda back in November.

Nakamba initially missed three Premier League games for Luton due to the injury but returned for the high profile game against champions Manchester City on December 10.

During the encounter Nakamba received his fifth yellow card of the season which meant he was suspended for the subsequent match against Newcastle United.

After missing Luton’s crucial 3-2 win away ar fellow relegation rivals Sheffield United on Boxing Day, Nakamba was expected to return for Saturday’s clash at home against struggling Chelsea.

However Luton revealed that the Zimbabwe star will be missing in action for an extended period after another injury setback which resulted in an operation on his meniscus.

“Zimbabwe international Marvelous Nakamba will be out of action for a significant amount of time after a successful operation on his meniscus earlier this week,” the Premier League side said.

Contrary to reports that Nakamba sustained the injury during Zimbabwe’s World Cup qualifier in Rwanda, Luton Town boss Rob Edwards said he suffered the latest setback at training this week.

“It was an innocuous one, it came when he made a pass in training,” explained the Luton boss.

“We won’t put a timeframe on it, but it’s not good and it will be some significant time. He’ll see a specialist in a few weeks’ time. It’s frustrating for him and of course for us as he’s a big, big player.”
