Zimbabwean hopeful Ethan Sutherland has been called up to the Scotland Under-21 squad for their upcoming UEFA European Championship qualifiers against Gibraltar and Bulgaria next week.
The 19-year-old rising star, who plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers U21 alongside fellow Zimbabwean Tawanda Chirewa, has been in superb form this season. Sutherland has impressed in the Premier League 2, contributing three goals and three assists, and showcasing his versatility as both a left-back and a winger.
Born in Scotland to a Zimbabwean mother and a Scottish father, Sutherland is eligible to represent either nation at senior level. He previously featured for Scotland’s U19 team but has publicly shown interest in representing Zimbabwe, even visiting the Zimbabwean Embassy in the UK earlier this year to sort out his passport — a clear signal of his commitment to the Warriors.
However, while Scotland have now moved to integrate him into their youth setup, ZIFA is yet to make a formal approach. With Sutherland’s stock rapidly rising, Scotland appear eager to fast-track him through their system, potentially complicating Zimbabwe’s hopes of securing his services in the future.
The ball now lies in ZIFA’s court — will the Warriors act before it’s too late?
