US-based Zimbabwean sprinter Alpha Mpofu has officially committed to the University of Kentucky, marking a significant step in his rising athletics career and strengthening Zimbabwe’s growing presence in the NCAA track and field system.
Bulawayo-born Mpofu, a powerful 400m sprinter, heads to Lexington with an impressive personal best of 46.31 seconds, a time that immediately places him among the promising young athletes entering Division I competition.
His progression has drawn steady attention in the U.S. collegiate circuit, particularly after a standout spell at New Mexico Junior College (NMJC), one of the most competitive programs in the NJCAA ranks.
Mpofu was scouted by Kentucky coaches following his strong performances for NMJC, where he consistently produced competitive times and established himself as one of the program’s most reliable sprinters. His success at junior college level mirrors the pathway of several African athletes who have used the NJCAA system as a springboard into major NCAA programs.
His move to the Wildcats will see him follow in the footsteps of fellow Zimbabwean sprinter Tapiwanashe Makarawu, who also competed for Kentucky and established himself as one of the top Southern Africa exports in U.S. collegiate sprinting. Mpofu’s signing continues a growing trend of Zimbabwean athletes making their mark across American universities in events ranging from sprints to distance running and field disciplines.
The University of Kentucky boasts one of the top track and field programs in the SEC, widely regarded as one of the strongest conferences in U.S. collegiate athletics. Training under high-performance coaching, with access to world-class facilities, is expected to accelerate Mpofu’s development as he targets improved times and national team recognition.
Mpofu becomes the latest Zimbabwean talent to break into the NCAA system, joining a wave of young athletes who have been excelling across campuses in the United States—an encouraging sign for the future of Zimbabwean
